VILA REAL DE SANTO ANTONIO, Portugal – The United States women’s national team remained perfect in the Algarve Cup, netting all of its goals after halftime to register a 3-0 win over Switzerland on Friday at the Estadio Municipal.
The victory lifted the Americans (2-0-0, 6 points) into the Group B lead, while Switzerland (1-0-1, 3 points) lost for the first time in two outings.
Alex Morgan opened the scoring in the 54th minute, right-footing home unmarked from inside the six-yard box for her 51st international goal off Lauren Holiday's right-sided free kick.
In the 72nd minute, the CONCACAF champion doubled its advantage through substitute Amy Rodriguez. Goalkeeper Stenia Michel saved Christen Press’ initial effort, but the rebound came to Rodriguez, who spun 360 degrees in the goal box before left-footing the ball into the back of the net.
Abby Wambach, the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Player of the Year, came on for Morgan in the 79th minute and tallied her world-record 178th goal only two minutes later. She latched onto a poor back pass, beat her marker and lofted a chip from 18-yards out into the lower-right corner to complete the scoreline.
The U.S. will meet Iceland in its final group stage match on Monday.
