NICOSIA, Cyprus -- Canada launched its bid for top honors in the Cyprus Women’s Cup with a 2-0 win over Group A rival Scotland on Wednesday at the GSP Nicosia Stadium.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup host did not waste any time in imposing its will early on, taking a 1-0 lead in the third minute as 16-year-old Jessie Fleming finished Christine Sinclair’s left-sided cross at the far post.

Sinclair sealed the game nine minutes after the break with her 152nd international goal.  From 20-yards out, the seasoned campaigner right-footed a Rhian Wilkinson feed into the back of the net.

The win for Canada took its unbeaten run at the Cyprus Women’s Cup to seven.  In the other Group A game, Italy edged Korea Republic, 2-1.

In Group C play, another CONCACAF team, Mexico won by the same 2-0 margin over South Africa.  Veronica Charlyn Corral (53’) and Sandra Stephany Mayor (69’) scored for the Tricolor.

Canada will next face Korea Republic on March 6, while Mexico will face Czech Republic on the same day.
