MIREBALAIS, Haiti – An 85th minute own-goal by Dayanai Baro Mesa on Tuesday propelled host Haiti to a 1-0 victory over Cuba and a first-place finish in Group 4 of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Women's Caribbean Cup, the region’s qualifying tournament for the next FIFA Women’s World Cup.
That placement earned the Haitians an automatic berth in the final round – to be hosted by Trinidad & Tobago in August – and kept them in contention for a spot in the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Championship, where the confederation’s representatives to Canada 2015 will be decided.
Cuba now waits to see if its performance will also secure advancement as one of the best second-place teams.
Group winners Antigua & Barbuda (Group 1), Martinique (Group 2) and Bermuda (Group 3) had previously booked their tickets to Trinidad.
The last first-round group (Group 5) is scheduled to start on June 18 as the host Dominican Republic, Jamaica and St. Lucia will face each other at the Estadio Panamericano in San Cristobal.
