SUNDERLAND, England -- Sunderland announced Tuesday that it has acquired United States international DeAndre Yedlin on a loan for the remainder of the season from fellow English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.
The 22-year-old defender/midfielder officially joined Tottenham this past January after agreeing to a transfer in August 2014 while a member of the Seattle Sounders.
“I’m delighted to be given the opportunity to play for a club with such great history,” said the 23-time capped Yedlin. “I’ve heard fantastic things about Sunderland and the supporters from Claudio Reyna and Jozy Altidore. Claudio speaks very highly of Dick Advocaat from his time at Rangers.”
Retired U.S. international Reyna played for the Black Cats from 2001-03, while Altidore – a current member of the American squad – was with the club from 2013-15.
Yedlin began his career with Seattle Sounders, appearing in four Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League matches and scoring in a 3-1 quarterfinal win over visiting Tigres on March 12, 2013.
After a series of promising performances in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, he attracted the interest of Tottenham and made his top-flight debut in the Barclays Premier League game against Aston Villa on April 11, 2015.
U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has called up Yedlin for upcoming home friendlies against Peru (September 4 in Washington. D.C) and Brazil (September 8 in Foxborough, Massachusetts).
