WOLFSBURG, Germany -- VfL Wolfsburg announced Wednesday the acquisition of United States international John Brooks from fellow German Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin. Details of the transaction were not disclosed.
The 24-year-old defender inked a five-year contract with the side that avoided relegation by triumphing over Eintracht Braunschweig, 2-0 on aggregate, in a playoff.
"The decision to leave my hometown wasn’t an easy one, but having spoken with (sporting director) Olaf Rebbe and (head coach) Andries Jonker, I really wanted the move to Wolfsburg, because they both quickly convinced me of their plans with VfL,” said Brooks. “I want to play my part in helping VfL to repeat the success they have enjoyed in recent years."
Brooks joined Hertha Berlin in 2007, making his professional debut with the club in the 2. Bundesliga in August 2012. He went on to score seven in 119 league appearances.
Although also eligible to represent Germany at the international level, Brooks made his senior debut for the U.S. in a 4-3 win over Bosnia on August 14, 2013, and has earned 30 caps.
The 6-foot-4 Brooks has competed in the FIFA World Cup (2014: 1 game/1goal), CONCACAF Gold Cup (2015: 4/0) and the Copa America (2016: 5/0).
