PARAMARIBO, Suriname – The Final Round of the Concacaf Qualifiers to the 2026 FIFA World Cup continued with Suriname and Guatemala drawing 1-1 in Group A on Friday at Dr. Ir. Franklin Essed Stadion in Paramaribo, Suriname.
Richonell Margaret nearly placed Suriname in the lead in the 11’, with a right-footed shot from outside the box that was tipped by Guatemala goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen before bouncing off the crossbar.
Suriname had back-to-back opportunities in the 36’ but wasn’t able to strike as a long-range attempt from Margaret, and subsequent header from Sheraldo Becker, were both saved by Hagen.
Darwin Lom scored the opener for Guatemala in the 75’ to take the lead just one minute after entering the match, finding the back of the net with a right-footed volley from the center of the box.
Virgil Misidjan found a late equalizer for Suriname in the 90’+4’ with a first-time right footed hit to the bottom right corner.
With the result, Suriname improved to five points, while Guatemala obtained its second point of the campaign.
Both teams will continue their qualifying campaigns on Tuesday, when Suriname visits Panama and Guatemala travels to face El Salvador.
