MIAMI - The First Round of World Cup Qualifying for Qatar 2022 continues in the Concacaf region on Sunday, March 28, with teams looking to build on strong starts or, in some cases, stave off elimination from the next round.

Cayman Islands vs Canada

The Cayman Islands dropped its opening match 3-0 to Suriname and now face another stiff test against Canada. The Canadians opened with a 5-1 victory over Bermuda, keyed by a Cyle Larin hat trick and three assists from Alphonso Davies.

Dominica vs Dominican Republic

Dominica fell short in its opener, losing to the Dominican Republic 1-0, and will look to bounce back with a challenging match against 2018 FIFA World Cup participant Panama. Panama also won by a 1-0 scoreline with Jair Catuy’s 82nd-minute goal enough to get past Barbados.

Puerto Rico vs Trinidad and Tobago

Puerto Rico hosts Trinidad and Tobago in Mayaguez aiming to bounce back from an opening defeat to St, Kitts and Nevis. Dave Sarachan will hope to generate more in attack, with a team that may or may not be facing a Trinidad and Tobago team with CB Sheldon Bateau. After scoring in a 3-0 win over Guyana, Bateau is working back from an injury that saw him substituted at halftime. Levi Garcia and Ryan Telfer, the other goalscorers in the first match, are ready to go.

Cuba vs Curacao

Cuba stayed in Guatemala after a 1-0 loss to the Central Americans and now faces Curacao at the Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores. After only being able to come on for the second half, Norwich City forward Onel Hernandez will seek a full debut for Cuba, while Curacao manager Guus Hiddink wants the momentum to continue after a 5-0 victory against St. Vincent and the Grenadines to begin qualification, with Juninho Bacuna scoring a pair in the win.

Montserrat vs El Salvador

The final match of the day sees Montserrat take on El Salvador, with each side attempting to stay undefeated in qualification. A double from Lyle Taylor helped the Emerald Boys get a point against Antigua and Barbuda, while El Salvador leveraged a goal and an assist from Gerson Mayen to get past Grenada, 2-0. These teams have clashed three times in Concacaf play since September 2018. El Salvador won all three, but two of those wins came by just a single goal.

Cayman Islands 0-11 Canada

After being delayed a day to comply with COVID-19 protocol, Canada was able to continue its strong start to World Cup qualification with an 11-0 victory over the Cayman Islands.

Lucas Cavallini led the way with a second-half hat trick, and Alphonso Davies and Mark-Anthony Kaye both scored two goals a piece. Frank Sturing’s strike in the sixth minute opened the scoring and Cyle Larin followed up his hat trick against Bermuda with a goal in the 14th minute. David Wotherspoon and Alistair Johnston also scored.

Canada now turns its attention to dates with Aruba and Suriname in June, while Cayman Islands will close out qualification against Aruba and Bermuda.
