MEXICO CITY -- Hector Moreno believes that Mexico will fulfill its objective of taking maximum points this Friday against visiting Honduras in a World Cup qualifier.
The 25-year-old spoke with reporters about the importance of obtaining a victory in the Azteca Stadium, something that did not happen in three previous matches at home against Jamaica, the United States and Costa Rica.
“We let three games go by us at home, but we can no longer go back to that, we have this very important game Friday because it’s 90 minutes where we have to give everything so that we can leave happy,” Moreno said. “And, above all, with three points.”
In their first meeting in March, Javier Hernandez scored twice within the opening 54 minutes to give Mexico a 2-0 road lead. The Catrachos stormed back, though, with goals from Carlo Costly and Jerry Bengtson with in a three-minute span to force a 2-2 draw.
The Espanyol defender remembers that game and realizes that Honduras will try to repeat the recent achievements of others at the Azteca. In order to prevent that from occurring, Mexico has is taking it one day and one game at a time.
“To come to the Azteca and be able to take a point is something that fills them with hope, for that reason we are very focused and thinking about doing things well and then go into the game versus the United States,” Moreno expressed.
If Mexico wants to finish the Hexagonal with one of CONCACAF’s three automatic berths at Brazil 2014, it can’t look at it any other way.
