MÉXICO CITY, Mexico -- After the completion of a brief training camp on Wednesday, Mexico head coach Miguel Herrera expressed satisfaction with his players’ efforts.
In a press conference at the Mexican Football Federation’s High Performance Center, the 45-year-old spoke about the group’s objectives over the four days they were together.
“When they arrived, I told them to take the idea of what they do in their club and connect it a little with what we intend to do here,” he said.
Herrera also shed light on the Tricolor’s European-based players, who could not participate in the camp as the squad prepared for a March 5 friendly against Nigeria.
“We lack the ones from Europe joining us, it is the only match where I can see them, but I know that one match cannot qualify a player,” noted Herrera. “The internal competition is very good and that is what I want to see, that the Mexicans who come from over there enter into the dynamic to compete with the ones who are doing things well here.”
Herrera addressed questions on other players, including Isaac Brizuela. The midfielder, whose Toluca side will face the San Jose Earthquakes in next month’s CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) quarterfinals, drew high praise.
“Today, I think that Brizuela is the league’s best,” Herrera affirmed. “He is doing very good, impressive things. He is starting to grow into his role. He is much more active in his team, much more determined and has me very happy.”
Also, the former Club America head coach mentioned Marco Fabian, the player who will form part of the Cruz Azul team that will take on Sporting Kansas City in the CCL quarterfinals. Herrera acknowledged that Fabian has had some good moments during the present campaign, but remarked that the 24-year-old, “still has not gotten to the level we saw him before.”
