MIAMI – The 2025 Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship continued Monday as the Mexico and Panama earned victories in Group B at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela, Costa Rica.

Mexico secured the first place in the group to decide its seeding in the Semifinals. Panama exited the tournament with a victory.

Panama 4, Nicaragua 1 

Panama closed its participation with a 4-1 win against Nicaragua.

Las Canaleras opened the scoring in the 16’ with a right-footed strike form Kayra Pérez. Sherline King doubled the lead in the 32’ with a left-footed banger from outside the box.

Pérez collected her brace in the 48’ extend the Panamanian lead. Nicaragua pulled one back in the 75’ through Adriana Munguia free kick. 

Nathalie Bello added a fourth for Panama in the 82’ to put a bow on the victory.

Kayra Pérez Joins Panama’s Historic List

With her goals, Kayra Pérez became the second Panamanian player to score a brace in the Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship since 2004. The first was Shayari Massiel Camarena against Guyana on Group F Matchday 3, March 2, 2022.

Sherline Marie King and Nathalie Bello Make Their Mark 

Sherline Marie King scored her second career goal and became the first Panamanian player to deliver two assists in a single match (since 2020). Nathalie Bello also found the net for the first time in the tournament.

Elsa Grant Shines in Goal, King Leads the Attack 

Although Panama did not advance past the group stage, it laid groundwork for future tournaments, led by goalkeeper Elsa Grant, who made 27 saves. On the offensive end, Sherline Marie King had an outstanding performance with two goals and two assists (80% contribution). 

Panama’s all-time record in the Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship now stands at: GP-28 W-6 D-3 L-19 GF-31 GA-100.

Greta Genie, a Promising Talent for Nicaragua 

With 15 saves, Greta Genie provided stability and confidence for Nicaragua in Group B. Her teammate Violeta Urbina added 7 saves, totaling 22 between the two goalkeepers. 

Offensively, Jennifer Peralta and Adriana Lilibeth Munguía each scored. 

Nicaragua’s all-time record in the Women’s U-20 Championship is: GP-15 W-0 D-1 L-14 GF-8 GA-49.

 

Mexico 4, Canada 2 

Mexico earned a 4-2 win against Canada in a meeting for first place in the group. Both teams had assured their qualification to the Semifinals and the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, leaving only seeding to be decided.

Canada took the lead in the 18’ thanks to Teegan Melenhorst, who sent a left-footed shot in the box. An own goal by Janet Okeke in the 26’ leveled the score for Mexico.

Mexico took the lead in the 37’ as María González took advantage of a deflection in the box. Montserrat Saldívar extended the Mexican lead in the 45’+2’. 

Annabelle Chukwu struck for Canada in the 59’ before Saldívar secured her brace and the fourth goal for Mexico in the 84’ to seal the result.

First Time Mexico Scores Four Goals Against Canada 

Mexico defeated Canada for the first time by scoring four goals in a single match and extended its unbeaten run against them to five consecutive games (W-3 L-2) in the Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship. The 4-goal defeat was only the second such loss in Canada’s history; the first came against the United States (0-4) in the quarterfinals on March 4, 2020.

Montserrat Saldívar and Annabelle Chukwu Keep Rising 

Mexico’s Montserrat Saldívar raised her tournament tally to six goals (1 in 2023, 5 in 2025), while Canada’s Annabelle Chukwu reached eight goals overall (4 in 2023, 4 in 2025).
