MIAMI, Florida – Canada and the United States were among the big winners on Friday at the 2022 Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Qualifying Championship in the Dominican Republic.
Canada punched their quarterfinal ticket with a commanding 13-0 win over Cayman Islands at the Estadio Olimpico Felix Sanchez in Santo Domingo.
Olivia Smith scored four goals (7’, 15’, 45+2’, 47’), while Kaila Novak (5’, 51’) and Miya Grant-Clavijo (39’, 73’) bagged braces for the Canadians. Also adding their names to the scoresheet were Zoe Burns (60’), Brooklyn Courtnall (69’), Mia Pante (74’), Keera Melenhorst (76’) and Florianne Jourde (85’).
Also in action was a Puerto Rico side that marched to a 7-0 victory against Saint Kitts and Nevis at the Estadio Panamericano in San Cristobal.
A Saint Kitts and Nevis own goal in the 8’ got the Boricuas on the scoreboard, and they never looked back after that.
It was no surprise to see Brooke Hart leading the way. After leading the team in goals scored during the group stage with two, Hart tallied a hat trick with scores in the 13’, 32’ and 33’.
Alondra Nieves (12’), Ivy Garner (45+2’) and Jessica Torres (71’) also got in on the act to pave the way to the final eight.
Reigning champions U.S. are also through to the next round courtesy of an impressive 14-0 triumph over Suriname in Santo Domingo.
Andrea Kitahata (18’, 46’, 52’) and Michelle Cooper (47’, 82’, 90’) each scored a hat trick, while Emily Colton (1’, 88’) and Alyssa Thompson (54’, 85’) had braces. Joining that quartet on the scoresheet were Talia DellaPeruta (24’), Lilly Reale (67’), Avery Patterson (72’) and Emily Mason (80’).
With her hat trick, Kitahata has not only scored in every U.S. game during the tournament, but has also taken the overall lead for tournament top scorer with seven goals.
Rounding out the day was El Salvador, who downed host nation Dominican Republic 5-2 in San Cristobal.
The Central Americans got off to a dream start with an Isabella Recinos right-footed rocket in the 31’ for a 1-0 lead. Two minutes later in the 33’, Victoria Sanchez scored on a long-range effort of her own from outside the area to double the El Salvador lead to 2-0.
But that duo was topped by teammate Emely Reyes, who struck from 35 yards out to make it a 3-0 advantage to the Cuscatlecas.
The Dominican Republic showed plenty of fight, however, as Liliane Clase powered home a header in the 43’ to make it a 3-1 scoreline at the break.
The momentum stayed with the home side and suddenly it was 3-2 in the 58’ when Ariana Diaz pounced on a loose ball in the box and fired in for the goal.
El Salvador kept their composure, though, and a second goal from Sanchez in the 70’ via header and another goal from Reyes in the 87’ from distance sealed the 5-2 win.
