MIAMI – The 2025 Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship continued Saturday as Canada and Mexico earned consecutive victories in Group B at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela, Costa Rica.

Canada and Mexico sealed their place among the top two in their group, clinching a berth in the Semifinals. With their ticket to the Knockout Stage, the two nations also secured participation in the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup.

Nicaragua 1, Canada 4

Canada earned a 4-1 win over Nicaragua to obtain a second consecutive victory in its campaign.

The Reds were reduced to ten players in the 10’ after a red card was issued to Inès Nourani. 

Canada obtained the opening goal in the 23’ through an Adriana Munguia own goal following a corner kick opportunity where Annabelle Chukwu headed the ball towards the net.

First Goal by Nicaragua Against a North American Opponent 

Nicaragua has now scored seven goals in the Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship. The penalty goal by Jennifer Peralta (37’) was the country’s first-ever goal against a North American team in the tournament’s history. It was also Nicaragua’s second penalty goal in the competition, following Jaclyn Gilday’s against Jamaica (January 23, 2018) on Matchday 3 of Group B.

Third Own Goal in Favor of Canada 

Nicaragua’s Adriana Lilibeth Munguía (23’) scored the third own goal in Canada’s favor in the tournament’s history, following previous own goals by Cuba’s Alianne Matamoros Reyes (36’) in the Round of 16 on February 29, 2020, and Panama’s Alejandra Carolina Garay (25’) on Group A Matchday 2, May 28, 2023.

Annabelle Chukwu Increases Her Tally 

Teegan Natasha Melenhorst of Canada scored her first goal of the tournament, while Annabelle Chukwu increased her 2025 tournament total to three goals, and Liana Emma Tarasco reached two goals. Tarasco also registered her first assist, becoming the eighth Canadian player to score and assist in the same Women’s U-20 Championship match.

Canada Extends Unbeaten Streak vs Central American Teams 

Canada extended its unbeaten streak to 11 matches against Central American opponents in the Women’s U-20 Championship (W-10 D-1). For the first time, Canada defeated two Central American teams in back-to-back matches: 7-1 vs Panama and 4-1 vs Nicaragua. Previously in 2020, they had a win and a draw (2-0 vs El Salvador, 0-0 vs Guatemala).

Canada Moves to Third in All-Time Goals 

Canada has now scored 165 goals in the history of the Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship, placing them third among all nations, behind only Mexico (196) and the United States (322).

 

Nicaragua equalized in the 37’ as Jennifer Sarantes converted on a penalty kick opportunity.

Teegan Melenhorst regained the lead for Canada in the 45’+3’ before Chukwu extended the lead in the 45’+8’. 

Liana Tarasco added another for the North Americans in the 85’ to seal the victory and keep pace in the race for first place. 

Panama 0, Mexico 4

Mexico earned a 4-nil victory against Panama to gain its second win of the 2025 edition.

Deiry Ramírez led the scoring with a brace in the first half, striking in the 2’ and 43’. Alice Soto joined the scoresheet in the 47’ to add to her assist on Ramírez’s second goal.

Montserrat Saldívar added a fourth for Mexico in the 86’ to put a bow on the victory and secure the World Cup qualification for the two North American nations.

Mexico Reaches 200 Goals in the Women’s U-20 Championship 

Montserrat Saldívar (86’) scored her 4th goal and Mexico’s 200th all-time goal in the history of the Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship, making Mexico the second nation to reach the 200-goal milestone, joining the United States.

Alice Soto Becomes Mexico’s All-Time Assist Leader 

Alice Fernanda Soto reached six assists in the Women’s U-20 Championship — three in 2023 and three in 2025 — becoming Mexico’s all-time assist leader since 2020, surpassing Destinee Paolinetti (5 in 2020). Soto also scored her third career goal in the tournament (1 in 2023, 2 in 2025).

Mexico Reaches 26 Braces in Tournament History

Deiry Lorelí Ramírez scored her first two goals in the competition, helping Mexico record its 26th brace in Women’s U-20 Championship history, the second-most of any team behind the United States’ 38.

Mexico Extends Unbeaten Streak Against Central American Teams 

With the 4-0 victory over Panama, Mexico secured its 13th consecutive win over Central American teams, scoring 54 goals and conceding only 3 in those matches. Mexico is now unbeaten in 15 straight games against Central American sides (W-14 D-1). The only loss was a 3-4 defeat to Costa Rica on June 5, 2004, in the Third-Place Match. Mexico’s goals in that match were scored by Mónica Ocampo (28’), María Isabel Valdéz (40’), and Christine Nieva (68’); Costa Rica’s goals came from Amara Wilson (20’), Mariam Montes (66’, 80’), and Laura Sánchez (83’).

Mexico Among Top Three in All-Time Wins 

Mexico reached 42 victories in the Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship, solidifying its hold on second place in the all-time wins list, behind only the United States (55). Canada completes the top three with 40 wins.
