TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras – The Round of 16 of the 2022 Concacaf Men’s Under-20 Championship in Honduras continues on Sunday with eight teams aiming to land the remaining four quarterfinal spots.

Canada vs Guatemala

The day begins with Canada facing Guatemala at the Estadio Nacional in Tegucigalpa in the first ever meeting between the two nations in the CMU20 era (since 2009).

In the group stage, Canada rebounded from an opening 1-0 loss to Cuba to finish third in Group A to secure their knockout round place. Lowell Wright played a big part in that, scoring in the 2-2 draw with the United States and then the 4-0 over Saint Kitts and Nevis in the finale.

Wright and others will have to be at their best on Sunday against a Guatemala side that was second in Group G. The Chapines suffered a 5-1 loss to El Salvador, but then finished with two straight wins, downing Panama 3-1 and then Aruba 2-1.

The dangerman for Guatemala without question has been Arquimides Ordonez, who was the only player in the entire tournament to have scored in all three group stage matches.

Jamaica vs. Haiti

The action will then shift to the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano in San Pedro Sula where it will be an all-Caribbean encounter between Haiti and Jamaica. It will be the first ever CMU20 meeting between the two nations.

Haiti enjoyed a very good group stage with a win and two draws to come second in Group F. Steevenson Jeudy, who was the Best Young Player Award winner at the 2022 Flow Concacaf Caribbean Club Championship with Violette AC of Haiti, is the tournament’s joint-top scorer with four goals and will lead the Haiti attack.

Jamaica reached the knockout round by virtue of their third-place finish in Group H and boast the firepower of Jahmari Clarke, who has two goals in the tournament.

El Salvador vs Dominican Republic

Next on the docket will be a return to the Estadio Nacional where high-flying El Salvador take on Dominican Republic, one of the four teams that advanced from last November’s CMU20 Qualifying.

El Salvador finished first in Group G and deploy a spread-the-wealth approach in their attack, with seven different players accounting for the team’s nine goals in the group stage.

The Dominican Republic were winners of Group B in CMU20Q, edging out Saint Lucia in dramatic fashion with two goals in the final six minutes in a 2-2 draw with Saint Lucia in their final match to punch their CMU20 ticket.

Jason Joseph (3 goals in CMU20Q) and Edison Azcona (2 goals) will be the ones to watch for the Dominican Republic in this first ever CMU20 meeting between the two sides.

Puerto Rico vs. Mexico

The day then ends back at the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano where Mexico will square off with another team that advanced from CMU20Q, Puerto Rico.

Mexico marched to a first-place finish in Group F with 13 goals scored and none conceded, with Esteban Lozano providing an attacking spark with three goals.

Puerto Rico came out on top in a three-team tiebreaker in Group C of CMU20Q and will look to Daniel Cruz Jr. and Jeremy de Leon to supply the goals. That pair had two goals each in CMU20Q.
