Mexico finishes Under-20 World Cup campaign with loss to Ecuador

GDYNIA, Poland – Mexico’s 2019 FIFA Under-20 World Cup campaign finished with a 1-0 defeat to Ecuador in Group B action on Wednesday at the Gydnia Stadium in Gdynia, Poland.

Mexico was plagued by a slow start, as Ecuador jumped out to a 1-0 lead in just the 12th minute.

Ecuador center-back Gustavo Vallecilla did well to get past a pair of Mexican defenders and then played a cut-back pass to Gonzalo Plata, who fired in for the goal.

El Tricolor looked to strike back and appeared to have pulled level through a Mario Trejo header in the 19’, only for the goal to be annulled after video review.

The back-and-forth from the two sides carried into the second half, with Mexico carving out several good looks at goal, however Ecuador GK Moises Ramirez proved alert and kept El Tricolor from finding the back of the net.
