GDYNIA, Poland Mexico’s 2019 FIFA Under-20 World Cup campaign kicked off with a narrow 2-1 defeat to Italy in Group B on Thursday evening at the Stadion GOSir in Gdynia, Poland.

It was a rough start for El Tricolor, who found itself down 1-0 in just the third minute of play when Italy’s Davide Frattesi fired in a shot from outside the area.

Mexico would settle into the match though and start to carve out its fair share of chances.

The equalizing goal would come in the 36’ when Roberto de la Rosa took advantage of an error from the Italy defense and thumped in a header to make it 1-1.

The two sides went back and forth to start the second half, as Mexico looked to grab its first lead of the day, but Italy had other ideas.

The Azzurri took a 2-1 lead in the 67’ when Mexico was unable to clear a corner kick and Luca Ranieri poked in a shot at the near post for the game-winning goal.

Mexico will look to bounced back on Sunday when it faces Japan.
