GOIANIA, Brazil – A valiant effort from Haiti fell short in a 4-2 defeat to Chile on Wednesday in Group B of the 2019 FIFA Under-17 World Cup at the Estadio da Serrinha in Goiania, Brazil.

Luis Rojas gave Chile an early 1-0 lead in the 11’ with a strong right-footed finish off a cross from the right wing.

A foul in the penalty area on Chile allowed Haiti to pull level, with Samuel Jeanty calmly converting the spot kick to make it 1-1 in the 37’.

It looked as if the two teams would head to halftime locked in a draw, but an own goal from Woodbens Ceneus in the 45’ gave Chile a 2-1 lead at the break.

The South American side then made it 3-1 in the 52’ as Gonzalo Tapia rose above everyone and spun a header into goal off a corner kick.

But there was no quit from Haiti and three minutes later in the 55’ the deficit was cut to 3-2 when Kervens Jolicoeur headed in a cross from the right.

Haiti pressed for an equalizer, but instead Chile regained a two-goal advantage via the penalty spot, with David Tati scoring the penalty in the 89’ to complete the 4-2 scoreline.
