MIAMI, Florida – The United States and Mexico were back in action on Wednesday in the 2023 FIFA Under-17 Men’s World Cup in Indonesia.
The U.S. collected their second straight win to open Group E with a 2-1 victory against Burkina Faso at the Jakarta International Stadium in Jakarta. With the result, the U.S. have also advanced to the knockout stage of the tournament.
The U.S. did all of their damage right before halftime, beginning with Keyrol Figueroa giving his side a 1-0 lead in the 45’ when he stabbed home a cross from the right wing.
Nimfasha Berchimas, who bagged a brace in the team’s opening 3-1 win versus South Korea, then tallied his third goal of the tournament in the sixth minute of first half stoppage time when a cross from the left flank found him at the far post, allowing Berchimas to steer home a shot for a 2-0 lead.
Despite a Burkina Faso goal in the 89’ from Jack Pantoulou Diarra, the U.S. would see things out to pocket the 2-1 victory.

Mexico 2 Venezuela 2
Mexico came away with their first point of the tournament with a 2-2 draw versus Venezuela in Group F at the Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung.
It was a frustrating start for El Tricolor, who found themselves behind 1-0 in just the sixth minute on a goal from Venezuela’s Alejandro Cichero.
But things would shift in Mexico’s favor, as a red card in the 40’ for Venezuela’s Giovanny Sequera gave Mexico a man advantage.
The 2023 Concacaf Men’s Under-17 Championship winners made the most of it and pulled level 1-1 in the 62’ through 2023 CMU17 Top Scorer Stephano Carrillo on a header off a cross from the left wing.
Five minutes later in the 67’ Mexico held a 2-1 lead when Luis Ortiz launched a long-range strike from outside the area that rippled the back of the net.
Venezuela were able to pull even via a late penalty conversion in the 84’ through Nicola Profeta, resulting in a share of the spoils.
Both Canada and Panama will return to action on Thursday to close out their group stage campaigns, beginning with Canada in Group B against Mali at the Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium in Surabaya.
Canada will be seeking their first result of the tournament and try to secure a victory that could place them into the next round.
Meanwhile, Panama will round out Group A against Ecuador at the Manahan Stadium in Surakarta.
Panama sit on one point following their draw with host nation Indonesia in which Oldemar Castillo supplied the goal and could propel themselves into the next round with a victory.
