BRASILIA, Brazil Mexico made history on Sunday night in an 8-0 victory over the Solomon Islands at the Estadio Bezerrao in Brasilia to wrap up their Group F campaign at the 2019 FIFA Under-17 World Cup.

It was the widest margin of victory by Mexico at an Under-17 World Cup, surpassing the 6-0 win over Tunisia in 1977.

With the win, Mexico also advanced to the knockout round where it will face Japan on Wednesday in the Round of 16.

Efrain Alvarez started the scoring 1-0 with a left-footed finish in the 3’, followed by Alejandro Gomez’s left-footed redirected shot into goal in the 33’ for a 2-0 lead.

Luis Puente made it 3-0 shortly before halftime in the 44’ and Israel Luna continued things in the 58’ for a 4-0 advantage.

Alvarez notched his second of the night in the 63’ with a left-footed rocket off a deflection in the area to stretch the lead to 5-0.

Ali Avila etched his name onto the scoresheet in the 72’ by knocking in a header to make it 6-0, before Jesus Gomez cleaned up a loose ball right in front of goal by pushing in a right-footed shot in the 80’ for a 7-0 advantage.

The night was then rounded out in style in the 90’ when Luna bagged his brace by rounding the goalkeeper and calmly sweeping in a shot to complete the 8-0 scoreline.
