SALÉ, Morocco – The FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup Morocco 2025 continued on Tuesday with the start of the Round of 16, as the United States exited the tournament following a 1-1 draw, falling 7–6 on penalties, against the Netherlands at Football Academy Mohammed VI (Pitch 1) in Salé, Morocco.
The Netherlands opened the scoring in the 3’ through Liv Pennock, who found the net with a right-footed shot in the box.
The United States pushed back, finding an equalizer in the 57’ thanks to a stunning left-footed kick from outside the area by Micayla Johnson.
The two sides remianed even thorugh the rest of the encounter, prompting for penalty kicks to decide who would advance to the next round.
Captain Pearl Cecil, Sydney Schmidt, Lauren Malsom, Kherrington Ream, Nyanya Touray, and Johnson found the net to keep the U.S.’ chances alive, however, Netherlands goalkeeper Maren Groothoff denied Chloe Sadler in sudden death to earn the victory for the Europeans.
The United States departs the 2025 U-17 Women’s World Cup with a record of 3-0-1.
