MANCHESTER, England -- Two-time reigning FIFA Women's World Player of the Year Carli Lloyd has signed with Manchester City Women's Football Club, it was announced Wednesday.
The United States international midfielder will play for the English club during its spring season, the F.A. Women's Cup and UEFA Women's Champions League matches.
“I’m incredibly excited to be joining Manchester City, a club which is leading the development of women’s football both on and off the pitch," said Lloyd, 34, who has 96 goals in 232 international appearances. "Having played in the U.S. throughout my career, the chance to fulfil a long-held ambition to test myself in a new footballing environment, as well as playing in the Champions League, is something I am relishing."
Lloyd will begin training with the team early next month following the She Believes Cup in the United States and will play in Manchester City’s UEFA Women’s Champions League quarterfinal series against Fortuna Hjorring (Denmark).
The 2015 CONCACAF Women’s Player of the Year became the third high-profile American to sign with an English side recently. Crystal Dunn (Chelsea) and Heather O'Reilly (Arsenal) will play in England for the rest of 2017.
