HARRISON, New Jersey -- The United States women’s national team suffered only its second loss on home soil since 2004, dropping a 1-0 decision to England in the SheBelieves Cup, before 26,500 fans at Red Bull Arena on Saturday night.

Ellen White scored the deciding goal in the 89th minute on a chilly night as temperatures fell to 23 ˚F Fahrenheit (5 ˚C) at the final whistle.

The result left the Americans (1W-0D-1L, 3 points) tied with England (1-0-1, 3) for second, one point behind first-place France (1-1-0, 4).  Germany (0-1-1, 1), which played the French to a scoreless draw in the first game of the doubleheader, is in fourth place.

On the winning goal, U.S. midfielder Tobin Heath cleared a corner kick that England's Lucy Bronze latched onto and fired a half-volley off the crossbar.  The ball bounded down in the penalty area and White shook off defenders Julie Johnston and Becky Sauerbrunn to fire into the net past goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris.

"Sometimes you don't learn about the details of the game, how important they are unless you sometimes unfortunately pay a price," said U.S. head coach Jill Ellis.  "So, would I rather learn those lessons now?  For sure.  I think sometimes you fail, the lesson hits home harder in terms of how you feel the sting of it."

The Americans meet France in Washington, D.C., in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday night, after England takes on Germany.
