TOKYO, Japan – The United States Women’s National Team will be seeking a spot in the knockout round when they take aim at Australia in their Group G finale of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday at Kashima Stadium in Kashima, Japan.
The U.S rebounded in style after their opening 3-0 loss to Sweden with a 6-1 victory against New Zealand on Saturday.
Four different players scored for the U.S. in addition to a pair of New Zealand own goals, giving the reigning world champions a big confidence boost heading into Tuesday’s contest.
Either a draw or a win would be enough to see the U.S. punch their ticket to the knockout stage.
The U.S. were back to their high-flying attacking ways against the Football Ferns, with Julie Ertz supplying a pair of assists and Christen Press notching both a goal and an assist.
That attacking swagger will be called upon again against an Australia side that will be looking to rebound from a 4-2 defeat to Sweden.
The Matildas are full of international experience with two players, Elise Kellon-Knight and Emily van Egmond, both with more than 100 caps, however it is the play of star striker Sam Kerr that will demand attention from the U.S. defense.
Kerr already has three goals in the Tokyo Olympics and leads the team with 45 goals in 95 international appearances.
Clamping down on the dangerous Kerr, while continuing their offensive output, will be paramount for the U.S. to advance.
