OTTAWA – FIFA Vice President and Concacaf President Victor Montagliani has concluded two days of meetings and celebrations in Canada’s capital, highlighted by a meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney. The discussions between the two Canadians centered on the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 and Concacaf’s growth and positive influence on football over the past decade.

Montagliani and Carney discussed the anticipation and significance of Canada serving as one of three host nations for the FIFA World Cup, which will be the world’s largest sporting event with a record 48 countries participating. They talked about how the tournament will impact communities across Canada and provide new opportunities for Canadian youth and organizations.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 will take place in Canada, the United States and Mexico in June and July 2026. Canada will host 13 matches, split between Toronto and Vancouver. Toronto's BMO Field will welcome six matches, while Vancouver's BC Place will host seven.

“It was an honor to meet with Prime Minister Mark Carney this week and discuss the tremendous potential ahead as the FIFA World Cup 2026 comes to our region,” said Montagliani, who also serves as chair of the tournament’s organization committee. “We had productive discussions about how this tournament will be a defining moment for the country and the meaningful legacy it will certainly create. I am grateful for the continued support of Prime Minister Carney and the Canadian federal government.”

Since his election in 2016 as Concacaf President, Montagliani has helped turn Concacaf into a positive force bolstered by a “One Concacaf” approach. Concacaf has created unity in the Confederation and expanded opportunities for its Member Associations with more inclusive and competitive tournaments.

A proud Canadian, Montagliani also took part in Canada Day celebrations at LeBreton Flats Park on Tuesday where thousands gathered to celebrate the nation’s history, diversity and culture.

The FIFA World Cup trophy was featured during the celebrations, generating enthusiasm among thousands of fans and visitors.
