MIAMI, Florida – The United States and Cuba will be among the ones to watch in Group D at the 2021 Concacaf Futsal Championship, which begins on Monday, May 3 in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
The U.S. were champions of the 1996 and 2004 editions, plus registered third-place finishes in the 2000 and 2008 tournaments.
The North American side will now be seeking a sixth FIFA Futsal World Cup appearance (1989, 1992, 1996, 2004, 2008), but they will first have to navigate a group that includes futsal giants Cuba, along with emerging El Salvador and Nicaragua.
The Cubans are as consistent as they come in the CFC. The islanders finished second in the 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008 tournaments, before a fifth-place finish in 2012 and a fourth-place finish in 2016.
All told, Cuba have qualified for five FIFA Futsal World Cups (1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2016) and will be trying to make it six at the 2021 CFC.
El Salvador return to the CFC for the first time since the 1996 edition, making this the second appearance for the Cuscatlecos.
Nicaragua will also be playing in their second CFC, with their lone previous appearance coming in 2000.
The top four finishers at the 2021 CFC will qualify for the 2021 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Lithuania.
