Twists and turns in latest Liga MX Femenil, NWSL matches

The women’s professional domestic leagues across Concacaf were back in action this week, keeping every fan on the edge.

MIAMI – The women’s professional domestic leagues across Concacaf were back in action this week, keeping every fan on the edge of their seat.

The NSWL action continued, with teams ready to enter the playoff push:

● After suffering their first home loss of the season last week, OL Reign bounced back, downing NJ/NY Gotham FC 4-1 on Sunday with Rose Lavelle, Megan Rapinoe (2) and Mandy Freeman as the goal scorers.

● The race for the sixth and final playoff place is on. Angel City FC, showing everyone that they want a spot in the playoffs, beat the Chicago Red Stars 1-0, with a goal from Savannah McCaskill. Angel City FC have reached seventh place in the standings, just two points behind Chicago.

● The Portland Thorns did what they needed to do to stay atop the standings. With goals from Christine Sinclair and Morgan Weaver, they won 2-1 versus the Washington Spirit, who haven’t won a game since May.


Monday evening marked the end of week 7 of Liga MX Femenil, with some results that drew a lot of attention:

● On Sunday afternoon, the Clasico Tapatio went to Chivas, 3-1. Captain Alicia Cervantes opened the scoring and didn’t stop there, later giving her team a 2-0 advantage. Zellyka Arce from Atlas pulled one back, but Adriana Iturbide gave the first-place holders the third and final goal.

● Toluca showed themselves, winning as locals against Cruz Azul 2-0, with an early goal by Patricia Jardon and a late header by Natalia Colin, securing three vital points. Toluca moved up the table and now sit in sixth place, on pace toward the Liguilla.

● The day finally came for Spanish international Jenni Hermoso, the new signing for Club Pachuca. Hermoso made her debut on Monday evening against Club Queretaro in a match which the Tuzas won 4-1, with Charlyn Corral and Liz Angeles scoring two times each. Hermoso assisted on the fourth and final goal.
