MIAMI, Florida – It takes time to build something great, and when it comes to women’s football, having the right players to do so is key. Honduras Captain Barbara Murillo crowned herself with her team, FC Lustenau Dornbirn Ladies, as champions of the 2. Bundesliga in Austria, getting promoted to play in the OFB Frauen-Bundesliga next season.

The 29-year-old defender arrived earlier this year to Austria after proving her skills in many different settings. Peru, Colombia, the United States, Mexico and Honduras were witnesses to what she had to offer to the game before she made the big jump to Europe.

The Honduran Women’s National Team captain went straight to work as soon as she landed in Austria. The team had a mission for this season, to get promoted to the first division, the OFB Frauen-Bundesliga. They reinforced their squad with many names, including Murillo’s, and started their dream campaign.

Week after week, they showed they wanted it more than any other team in the league. They ended their season with 54 points, winning the second tier of Austria. Murillo figured in a great part of this result, helping her team control games, showing why she was a key signing this year.

Having played 10 games, Murillo was a force whenever she had the chance, improving her skills and chances to mature her game. No doubt she will look to bring this performance into the first division of Austria.

Honduras did not qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup that will take place in Australia/New Zealand, but La Bicolor will press onward in an effort to keep improving their team, as they know they have a great generation of players that can take a step forward in Concacaf.

Murillo and all her club teammates will be ready to rest and celebrate their promotion, and son will be hoping to keep writing history in women’s football in Austria.
