Canada take aim at Olympic glory against Sweden

With star GK Stephanie Labbe and a top-notch defense in the fold, Canada will fancy their chances of slowing down Sweden goalscorers Stina Blackstenius (4 goals) and Fridolina Rolfo (3 goals).

TOKYO, Japan – The Canadian Senior Women’s National Team will play for a first ever Olympic Gold Medal when they take on Sweden in the Final of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on Friday night at Kashima Stadium in Kashima, Japan.

After taking the Bronze Medal at both London 2012 and Rio 2016, Canada are now a win away from standing atop the Olympic podium.

Canada reached the Gold Medal Match by making some history, with a 1-0 win over Concacaf rivals the United States, giving Canada their first win against the U.S. since 2001.

For Canada, it has been a tournament in which they have displayed an air-tight defense, combined with opportunistic scoring.

They conceded just three goals in the group stage before registering clean sheets against Brazil in the quarterfinals and the U.S. in the semifinals.

Canada’s defense will be tested one last time against an impressive Sweden side that won their group and defeated reigning world champions the U.S. 3-0 in their group stage opener.

Sweden have been just as prolific in the knockout stage, with a 3-1 quarterfinal win over Japan and a 1-0 semifinal triumph against Australia.

But with star GK Stephanie Labbe and a top-notch defense in the fold, Canada will fancy their chances of slowing down Sweden goalscorers Stina Blackstenius (4 goals) and Fridolina Rolfo (3 goals).
