MIAMI, Florida – 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League finalists Club America did not miss a beat in their return to action in Liga MX, picking up a 1-0 win at Atletico San Luis over the weekend.
It was a showcase of great defending from both sides throughout and top goalkeeping from Atletico San Luis’ Andres Sanchez and Club America’s Guillermo Ochoa.
The match looked destined to end in a scoreless draw, but in the waning seconds Club America FW Roger Martinez produced a moment of magic by eluding a trio of defenders before beating Sanchez with the winning goal in the 90+7’.
Las Aguilas (28 points) now have a six-point advantage over second-place Atlas (22) in the table.
Club America’s SCCL Final opponent Monterrey also took to the field but were narrowly edged 1-0 at home by Club Leon.
Elias Hernandez fired in a left-footed rocket in the 15’ to give Club Leon a lead that they would hold until the final whistle thanks to the efforts of GK Rodolfo Cota, who made several crucial saves in the second half.
2021 Scotiabank Concacaf League quarterfinalists Forge FC got back on the winning track with a 2-0 victory against Atletico Ottawa in the Canadian Premier League.
After seeing their six-match unbeaten streak in all competitions end last Monday with a 3-1 loss at Valour, Forge got goals from Omar Browne in the 62’ and Elimane Cisse in the 74’ to collect another three points.
Forge (40 points) are now third in the table and just two points behind first place Pacific (42) with two games in hand.
