WILLEMSTAD, Curacao – Defending Caribbean Club Shield champions Club Franciscain of Martinique got off to a winning start on the opening day of the 2019 Shield in Willemstad, Curacao.
The team that took home last year’s trophy and eventually qualified for the 2018 Scotiabank Concacaf League defeated Robinhood of Suriname 3-1 in Group D.
Quentin Annette (3’), Yann Thimon (45’) and Djenhael Mainge (76’) gave Club Franciscain a commanding lead before Stefano Rijssel tallied a consolation goal via the penalty spot (83’).
Group C saw Village Superstars of Saint Kitts and Nevis top Greenbay Hoppers of Antigua and Barbuda, 2-1, thanks to scores from Diquan Vidal Johnson (24’) and Kimaree Rogers (56’) that sandwiched a Tamorley Kaharie Thomas goal (40’).
Scholars International of Cayman Islands collected a clean sheet win in Group A, downing Fruta Conquerors of Guyana 2-0 on the strength of a Vurlon Mills own goal (42’) and a late Raul Rigoberto Garcia Rodriguez goal (90+4’).
In the other game in Group A, hosts Jong Holland of Curacao battled to a 0-0 draw with Santiago de Cuba, while rounding out the day in Group B was Moulien of Guadeloupe edging Weymouth Wales of Barbados, 1-0, courtesy of a goal from Willcyd Janky (38’).
