FIFA issues statement on Guatemalan Football Federation

Given the recent events that have taken place in Guatemalan football, FIFA would like to point out the following:

FIFA is deeply grateful to the members of the Standardization Commission of the Guatemalan Football Federation/Federación Nacional de Fútbol de Guatemala (FEDEFUT) headed by Ms. Torrebiarte for the sacrifice and effort they made to fulfill the mandate given by FIFA for the development and benefit of football.

FEDEFUT’s suspension cannot be lifted until the Autonomous Sports Confederation of Guatemala/Confederación Deportiva Autónoma de Guatemala (CDAG) approves the FEDEFUT statutes, which were approved unanimously on July 25, 2017, by the General Assembly of FEDEFUT, and are aligned with the requirements and statutes of FIFA and CONCACAF.

Once the FEDEFUT statutes are approved in full by the CDAG -- and there are conditions for organizing elections based on the aforementioned statutes -- a FIFA/CONCACAF mission will be held to evaluate the situation in Guatemala and analyze the steps to be followed. Until that occurs, FIFA and CONCACAF shall not recognize any authority representing FEDEFUT, regardless of the manner in which they have been elected or appointed.

"We are confident that the statutes approved by the General Assembly of FEDEFUT on July 25, 2017, will come into full force as soon as possible to normalize the situation of football in Guatemala. Until that happens and there are no conditions to organize FEDEFUT elections based on these statutes, the suspension to FEDEFUT cannot be lifted," said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

"The process of statutory reform promoted by FIFA and CONCACAF in Guatemala seeks to establish principles, structures and procedures necessary for the proper development and growth of Guatemalan football. This process must be completed in its entirety and that it is influenced by interests compromising its objective will not be accepted," said CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani.
