KINGSTON, Jamaica – Known for his no nonsense approach to refereeing, former FIFA international official Courtney Campbell intends to bring the same style to the development of referees in his homeland.
Campbell is the new President of the Jamaica Football Referees Association (JFRA) and has been tasked with raising the standard of officiating locally.
“We are not where we would want it to be,” said Campbell, who expressed confidence that change is coming. “We are improving and I am sure with the emphasis placed on development by the JFF (Jamaica Football Federation), we will get there.”
Campbell spent a decade (2004-2014) on the FIFA list of officials and his last major appointment was at the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup, where he refereed the semifinal between Mexico and eventual finalist Panama.
An army corporal by profession, Campbell has set out clear objectives for the future.
“Some of the improvements which myself and my colleagues will be targeting are to improve the welfare of the members, build a closer relationship between the JFRA and the Jamaica Football Federation, work very closely with the JFF Referees Committee to improve the standard of officiating and trying to get on par with the Central American level,” expressed the 45-year-old.
