2018 Concacaf Nations League Qualifying: Haiti top Cuba in thriller

MIAMI, Florida – This Friday at 7:00 PM ET, Concacaf will be airing a re-broadcast of two matches from 2019-20 Concacaf Nations League Qualifying: Montserrat vs. El Salvador and Haiti vs. Cuba. The matches can be seen on Concacaf’s YouTube and Facebook pages, plus the Concacaf App.

A packed house at the Stade Sylvio Cator in Port-au-Prince greeted the two sides when they kicked off on March 24, 2019 as part of week four of CNLQ. Both sides entered the affair with 3W-0D-0L records and a chance to finish atop the 34-team CNLQ table.

Haiti nearly broke the early deadlock in style in the 18’ as Mechack Jerome launched a right-footed rocket from 40 meters out that went blazing over the Cuba crossbar.

However, eight minutes later in the 26’ the hosts would get the game’s first goal on a brilliant finish from Duckens Nazon, who eluded six Cuban defenders before firing into net for a 1-0 Haiti lead.

Cuba would stay in it and fought back to get on level terms 1-1 in the 61’ with Luis Paradela turning in a rebound off a hard-struck Andy Baquero shot.

As full-time approached, the two teams appeared destined for a share of the spoils, but in the 87’ that all changed thanks to some brilliant playmaking from Nazon.

The Haiti FW danced past a trio of Cuban defenders and right before he went over the end line, he whipped in a cross that met the swinging left foot of Kevin Lafrance to earn Haiti a 2-1 win.

It was a victory that gave Les Grenadiers a first-place finish atop the 34-team CNLQ table, which served as a catalyst for their historic semifinal finish at the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup.
