2016-17 SCCL: Alphonso Davies takes Concacaf by storm

MIAMI, Florida – This Friday at 7:00 PM ET, Concacaf will be airing a re-broadcast of the 2019 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League quarterfinal second leg between Atlanta United and Monterrey, followed by the 2016-17 SCCL quarterfinal second leg between the Vancouver Whitecaps and the New York Red Bulls. Both matches will be shown on Concacaf’s Facebook and YouTube pages, plus the Concacaf App.

At present, one would be hard-pressed to find a better left winger in all of football than Canada’s Alphonso Davies.

The 19-year-old is currently starring in the Bundesliga with German giants Bayern Munich, but it was not that long ago when Davies was making his international breakthrough on the club level with the Vancouver Whitecaps in the 2016-17 SCCL.

At the age of 15, Davies made his SCCL debut when he entered as a substitute in the 1-0 win for the Whitecaps on matchday one against Central FC of Trinidad and Tobago on August 3, 2016.

His first start in the SCCL came in his third appearance, on matchday four at Sporting Kansas City, and it would be a night to remember for the young starlet.

With the score locked at 1-1 in second half stoppage time, all signs pointed to a share of the points at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City.

But Davies had other ideas and as the clocked ticked over to the 90+3’, a Vancouver break ended with Davies receiving a pass on the right edge of the penalty area and launching a left-footed shot that took a deflection off a Sporting Kanas City defender and spun into the back of the net to give Davies his first goal with the Vancouver first team.

Having appeared in three of Vancouver’s four group stage matches, Davies was ready for the bright lights of the SCCL knockout round and went the full 90 minutes to help Vancouver earn a 1-1 draw at the New York Red Bulls in their quarterfinal first leg.

In the second leg at home, Davies would once again prove decisive with an excellent finish in the 5’ to pave the way for Vancouver’s 2-0 second leg victory.

Davies would then cap his first international club tournament by starting both Whitecaps matches in the semifinals against Tigres, giving Davies a total of seven appearances and two goals in his SCCL debut season.
