LA CHORREA, Panama – Deportivo Saprissa has qualified for the semifinals of the 2019 Scotiabank Concacaf League and the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League after defeating Club Atletico Panama 1-0 in their 2019 SCL quarterfinal second leg on Tuesday night at the Estadio Agustin Sanchez in La Chorrea, Panama.
With Tuesday night’s result, the Ticos claimed a 4-2 victory on aggregate.
It was a fairly even first half between the two sides, but with no goals forthcoming. Saprissa sprayed a couple shots wide, while CAI were left frustrated by twice hitting the woodwork during the first 45 minutes.
Saprissa needed a spark to get their attack going, so they turned to the man that leads the competition in goals, Johan Venegas.
The Costa Ricans took a 1-0 lead in the 56’ thanks to a whipped in cross from the left flank from Randall Leal and the surging Venegas thumped in a header for his sixth goal of the tournament.
In need of two goals, CAI pushed numbers forward in attack and had chances, including another shot that hit the post, but in the end the Saprissa defense would nail down the clean sheet victory.
