MIAMI, Florida – The 2019 Scotiabank Concacaf League is in the books, marking the completion of another memorable tournament waged by some of the best teams in Central America, North America and the Caribbean.

Here are the top five matches of the 2019 SCL.

1. Saprissa 4-1 Olimpia, Semifinal second leg

In the annals of Concacaf, this will go down as one of the greatest comebacks in history. Facing a 3-1 deficit on aggregate and just 22 minutes left to play, Saprissa needed to score three goals to reach their first SCL final. Marvin Angulo pulled one back in the 69’, but it looked bleak for the Monstruo Morado heading into the 89’ and still in need of two goals. That’s when Angulo scored his second of the night to set the stage for a dramatic finale, and in the waning seconds of the fourth minute of stoppage time, David Ramirez scored the series-winner for the Ticos to complete the improbable 4-3 aggregate comeback.

2. Herediano 1-1 Waterhouse, Round of 16 second leg

2018 SCL champions Herediano of Costa Rica had every reason to believe that a second straight SCL was a possibility, but Jamaican club Waterhouse had other ideas and went toe-to-toe with the Tico outfit for 180 minutes in a series that ended in a 2-2 draw on aggregate. Matters had to be settled in a penalty shootout, where it was time for Waterhouse GK Akeen Chambers to shine. The Jamaican stopper first made a save on Ariel Soto’s attempt, which would have won the shootout for Herediano, and then converted his own penalty before Herediano GK Esteban Alvarado’s decisive miss.

3. AS Capoise 1-1 SV Robinhood, Preliminary Round, second leg

As the lone amateur club in the tournament, things were never going to be easy for SV Robinhood, and with 11 minutes to go in their Preliminary Round series against AS Capoise of Haiti, the Suriname club was down 1-0 on aggregate. But Robinhood would show the same spirit that carried them to the 2019 Concacaf Caribbean Shield championship, as a header from Cirilo Da Costa earned the visitors a 1-1 draw in the second leg in Haiti and a place in the Round of 16.

4. Saprissa 3-2 Independiente, Quarterfinal first leg

There was no shortage of fireworks in this quarterfinal first leg between Saprissa and Panama’s Club Atletico Independiente. The first half belonged to the Monstruo Morado thanks to a brace from Johan Venegas, but the visiting Canaleros mounted a ferocious comeback in the second stanza and looked poise to earn a 2-2 draw with goals from Jorman Aguilar and Omar Browne. The final half-hour was a toss-up, but in the end Saprissa’s strong mentality won out when Venegas converted a stoppage time penalty kick for a 3-2 win.

5. Marathon 1-1 Comunicaciones, Preliminary Round second leg

Following a 2-1 Comunicaciones win in the first leg in Guatemala, Honduran club Marathon only needed a 1-0 win in the second leg at home to advance and looked to have sewed things up on a spectacular goal from Justin Arboleda in the 80’. However, Comunicaciones’ faith never wavered and with the most delicate of touches, Cristian Hernandez curled in a shot from the right wing to give the Cremas the series-deciding away goal and a 3-2 result on aggregate.
