MIAMI, Florida – A berth in the 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League will be on the line when CD Marathon of Honduras welcome in defending Scotiabank Concacaf League champions Deportivo Saprissa of Costa Rica in the 2020 SCL quarterfinals on Tuesday night at the Estadio Tiburcio Carias Andino in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
Marathon reached this stage of the tournament after pulling out a thrilling 4-3 penalty shootout win over Guatemala’s Antigua GFC in the Round of 16.
The hero for the Catracho club was GK Denovan Torres, who made a pair of stops in the shootout to help secure his team’s passage to the next round. Torres will have to be on his toes against a Saprissa squad that is riding high in Concacaf play.
The defending champions opened their 2020 SCL with an impressive 4-1 triumph over Municipal of Guatemala in which FW Johan Venegas notched a hat-trick, giving him 11 career goals in just 10 SCL matches, while MF Marvin Angulo remains one of the principal playmakers, with three SCL assists.
Marathon have their own share of weapons as well, mainly MF Edwin Solano, who registered a team-high three shots in the previous round and has one career SCL goal.
While the two sides have never met in the SCL, they have faced each other in six previous occasions in either Concacaf Champions Cup or SCCL play, with each team winning three times.
