MIAMI, Florida – Following the completion of Tuesday night’s 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf League Play-In match, CD Marathon of Honduras have qualified for the 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League.
Five teams have qualified for the 2021 SCCL via the 2020 SCL, with either Real Esteli of Nicaragua or Motagua of Honduras qualifying as the sixth and final team from Wednesday’s 2021 SCL Play-In match.
Below is a list of teams qualified thus far for the 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League:
MEXICO
Club America
The seven-time Concacaf champions will play in their seventh SCCL after finishing as the runners-up in the 2019 Liga MX Apertura. Club America are currently in the quarterfinals of the 2020 SCCL, set to be completed in December 2020.
Monterrey
The four-time SCCL champions will get a crack at a fifth crown thanks to winning the 2019 Liga MX Apertura.
Cruz Azul
2013-14 SCCL champion Cruz Azul is back in the SCCL for an eighth time by virtue of their first-place standing in the Liga MX table at the time of the suspension of the 2020 Clausura due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Cruz Azul are currently in the quarterfinals of the 2020 SCCL, set to be completed in December 2020.
Club Leon
Club Leon are back in the SCCL for a second straight year and fourth overall as the second-place team in Liga MX at the time of the suspension of the 2020 Clausura due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
USA
Philadelphia Union
The Philadelphia Union become the 18th team from Major League Soccer (MLS) to qualify for the SCCL after winning the 2020 MLS Supporters’ Shield.
Portland Timbers
The Portland Timbers qualified for their third SCCL after winning the 2020 MLS Is Back Tournament.
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Atletico Pantoja
Atletico Pantoja of the Dominican Republic will compete in their second SCCL by virtue of finishing with the best record in the group stage of the 2020 Concacaf Caribbean Club Championship.
HAITI
Arcahaie
The Haitian club will appear in their first SCCL after qualifying through the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf League, reaching the semifinal stage of the tournament. Arcahaie become the fourth club from Haiti to qualify for the SCCL.
COSTA RICA
Deportivo Saprissa
The Costa Rican club will compete in the SCCL for a ninth time after qualifying through the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf League, reaching the semifinal stage of the tournament. Saprissa’s best SCCL finish came in the 2010-11 edition when they reached the semifinals.
Alajuelense
The Costa Rican club will compete in the SCCL for a sixth time after qualifying through the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf League, reaching the semifinal stage of the tournament. The Ticos reached back-to-back SCCL semifinals in 2013/14 and 2014/15.
HONDURAS
Olimpia
The all-time leader in SCCL appearances will participate in the tournament for a record 12th time in 2021 after qualifying through the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf League, reaching the semifinal stage of the tournament. Olimpia currently are in the quarterfinals of the 2020 SCCL and looking to reach a first ever semifinal.
Marathon
The Honduran club will compete in the SCCL for a sixth time after qualifying through the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf League. Marathon last participated in the SCCL in 2019 and reached the quarterfinals of the first two editions in 2008/09 and 2009/10.
