MIAMI, Florida – Guastatoya will be out to turn the tables on fellow Guatemalan club Comunicaciones when the two sides meet in the second leg of the 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf League semifinals on Tuesday night at the Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores in Guatemala City.
Comunicaciones emerged with a 1-0 win as the away team in last week’s first leg thanks to an Andres Lezcano goal, making Lezcano the leading scorer in the 2021 SCL with four goals.
But Guastatoya have already shown plenty of resilience in the current campaign and will be looking to do it again on Tuesday. In an ironic twist, Guastatoya have yet to win a match in the 2021 SCL, making them the only SCL semifinalist in history to reach the final four without ever tasting victory.
Guastatoya can look at their strong domestic record versus Comunicaciones for inspiration, having won 13 times in 33 all-time meetings with the Cremas, while there have been 10 wins for Comunicaciones and 10 draws.
The visitors will need the likes of Luis Landin and Omar Dominguez to step up. Landin has two goals and an assist in the tournament, plus five goals in his last nine matches against Comunicaciones, while Dominguez has a goal in the 2021 SCL and had seven ball recoveries in the first leg.
Overcoming a Comunicaciones side that has created a tournament-leading 64 scoring chances will be no easy feat.
Lezcano is not only the 2021 SCL’s top scorer, but also has two assists. Junior Lacayo poses a threat as well, with three goals from open play, while in the back GK Kevin Moscoso is as solid as they come, with an SCL-leading 22 saves.
After eliminating Guastatoya 2-1 on aggregate in the 2019 SCL Round of 16, Comunicaciones will hope those figures and more can lead the way to a second straight SCL series win over their domestic rivals.
