Toronto FC and Club America drew 1-1 at the Estadio Azteca on Tuesday sending Toronto FC to the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League final thanks to a 4-2 aggregate victory.
Alarm bells were ringing for the MLS side when forward Jozy Altidore had to leave the pitch in the seventh minute with an injury. The alarms stopped shortly after when TFC was able to get the away goal without Altidore.
After working the ball to the right wing, TFC moved back inside and played in Tosaint Ricketts, Altidore’s replacement. America’s William da Silva beat him to the ball but inadvertently played the ball directly into Jonathan Osorio’s pass for the goal.
From there, it was all America with Toronto goalkeeper Alex Bono making a handful of stunning saves to deny the home team a goal.
He made a reaction save to stop a diving header in the 28th minute and twice denied Bruno Valdez, keeping out a long-range effort in the 20th minute and pushing his 33rd-minute header over the bar. The 23-year-old shot-stopper was again called into action in the 64th minute, putting up a hand to stop a header from Alejandro Diaz.
America continued to push but couldn’t break through until it was too late. Mateus Uribe converted a stoppage-time penalty to shorten the distance between the teams, but Toronto FC moves into the final to face Guadalajara.
