SAN NICOLAS DE LOS GARZA, Mexico – Joffre Guerron scored in the second half to lift Tigres to a 1-0 win over visiting Club America in the first leg of the 2014 Liga MX Apertura final on Thursday before a crowd of 41,603 at the Estadio Universitario.
In a series pitting the regular season’s top two finishers against each other, Guerron struck in the 63rd minute, giving the second-place side an initial upper hand. From the left edge of the box, Damian Alvarez delivered a cross that the 29-year-old was able to head home over two defenders from nine-yards out.
The host extended its unbeaten streak to eight straight games, conceding one goal or fewer in each of those outings. Conversely, Club America is winless in eight of its last 10 matches.
The second leg will be played Sunday at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
Tigres and Club America have already earned berths in the 2015/16 CONCACAF Champions League.
