ZUAZUA, Mexico – Over the coming weeks, Tigres will be aiming to satisfy a pair of lofty objectives: repeat as Liga MX champion and capture the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League for the first time.
Winning the double is never simple and UANL sits in a demanding position.
Currently riding a five-game domestic winless streak, it has fallen to ninth place in the Clausura. If the season was to end today, there would be no postseason berth to celebrate.
Although Tigres can get back on the winning track Saturday at home against 16th place Dorados, it is challenging to resist the temptation of looking ahead to the first leg of the SCCL final against visiting Club America on April 20.
“To make the playoffs is a desire, an objective, a responsibility for us, the club and for the fans,” said goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman. “We are betting on the first objective, which is qualifying in any position. Now, a new final in CONCACAF has been added in. The club decided to compete equally, so on that side we are all happy. The objective is to go for both.”
The requirements necessary of a bid to lift two trophies can exact a toll, physically and mentally. Guzman, who has featured in six SCCL matches, believes the entire squad is responsible for straightening the Tigres ship.
“We all have the best inclination to achieve the objective of qualifying (for the playoffs),” the 30-year-old Argentine finished. “Obviously, it is everyone’s wish.”
Tigres has a posted a 3W-2D-1L record this season in Liga MX home games.
