SAN NICOLAS DE LOS GARZA, Mexico – Tigres’ quest for a first-ever CONCACAF club title continues on Wednesday night, when it visits Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the second leg of their 2016/17 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League semifinal.
After earning a 2-0 win in the opener on March 14, UNAL can advance to a second straight SCCL final with either a victory, draw or one-goal loss.
Should Tigres achieve that feat, the current Mexican champion would become the fifth club to advance to two consecutive SCCL finals, joining Cruz Azul (2008/09, 2009/10), Monterrey (2010/11, 2011/12, 2012/13), Santos Laguna (2011/12, 2012/13) and Club America (2014/15, 2015/16).
Head coach Ricardo Ferretti says that his side will be looking to wrap up the series emphatically and not sit back at BC Place.
“We should look for something more, with a goal we can achieve that, or two or as many as we can so that we can actually deserve the passage to the final,” expressed the 63-year-old.
With Tigres occupying 13th place in the 2017 Liga MX Clausura – four points off the playoff pace – the SCCL has provided a bright spot.
“We have to change our chip from the league tournament to this tournament,” Ferretti concluded. “In the league tournament things have not gone well at all, but in this one it has. Things have been adequate and we have the chance to improve even more.”
