LOS ANGELES – The 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup continued with Los Angeles FC earning a 3-nil win over Cruz Azul in the First Leg of their Quarterfinals series on Tuesday at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, California, USA.
Son Heung-Min opened the scoring for the MLS side in the 30’ as he slid to knock in a low cross from Mathieu Choinière.
LAFC doubled its lead nine minutes later when David Martínez showed off his speed and raced past a defender, firing one home from a tight angle in the 39’.
Martínez extended the advantage in the 58’ with an incredible run and solo effort, as he cut through the defense and finished with a left-footed blast.
Despite dominating with 65.2% possession, and 15 total shots, the reigning Champions Cup winners weren’t able to find an away goal. LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris had a big night with five saves.
LAFC has now won eight of its 11 home matches in the history of the tournament, including five of its last six. The MLS side has kept a clean sheet in all eight of its home wins in the competition.
Son Heung-Min has now recorded six goal contributions in his first five Champions Cup appearances (2 goals, 4 assists).
Cruz Azul will host the Second Leg of the series next Tuesday at Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla, Mexico. The winner on aggregate will advance to the Semifinals.

With goals from Son Heung-Min (30’) and David Martínez (37’), LAFC have scored seven first-half goals in this season’s Concacaf Champions Cup, the joint-highest total in that period, level with FC Cincinnati.
Mathieu Choinière recorded two assists tonight, becoming the third LAFC player to register a two-assist match in this season’s Concacaf Champions Cup, joining Mark Delgado (vs. Alajuelense) and Son Heung-Min (vs. Real España).
Son Heung-Min has recorded six goal contributions in his first five Concacaf Champions Cup appearances (2 goals, 4 assists). He is the second LAFC player to record more than five goal contributions in his first five matches in the competition, after Denis Bouanga (eight goal contributions in his first five appearances).
David Martínez recorded his second brace in 78 career matches for LAFC across all competitions. His first also came against a Liga MX side, scoring twice against Tigres in the Leagues Cup last August.
