SAN JOSE, Costa Rica - Saprissa may be in the midst of a busy domestic stretch in Costa Rica, but that is not preventing it from also thinking about the upcoming 2018 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League (SCCL) campaign.
The Monstruo Morado will open play in the Round of 16 against seven-time CONCACAF champion Club America (1st leg: February 21, home; 2nd leg: February 28, away).
"Saprissa has to be (domestic) champion and we want to win in CONCACAF," said attacking midfielder Marvin Angulo, who has four career SCCL goals.
Five games in to the 2018 Clausura season, Saprissa is in first place with a 4W-0D-1L record, but suffered its first loss on Saturday at Herediano (0-1).
With so much at stake on the horizon, Angulo stressed that he and his teammates need to return to winning ways, starting with Wednesday's visit from Grecia.
"We are on the right path. This loss wakes us up for what is coming," the 31-year-old finished. "We know that we cannot lose because at any moment other teams can reach us and we need to continue with a rhythm to stay in first place and qualify [for the Quadrangular] quickly."
