MIAMI, Florida – The Round of 16 of the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup kicks off on Tuesday evening as Costa Rican side Herediano host Robinhood of Suriname in the first leg at the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela, Costa Rica.

It has been quite a journey for both teams to arrive to this point. Herediano completed one of the greatest comebacks in Champions Cup history to advance from Round One when they rallied from a 4-1 deficit on aggregate in the second half of their second leg against Liga MX side Toluca. Herediano scored three straight goals for a 4-4 draw on aggregate and a series win via the away goal tiebreaker.

Meanwhile, Robinhood’s path to this stage of the Champions Cup took shape last summer in the 2023 Concacaf Caribbean Club Shield.

The Surinamese side took top honors in that tournament to qualify for the 2023 Concacaf Caribbean Cup, and then promptly won that tournament to qualify for their first Champions Cup since 1994.

Five-time runners-up in the Champions Cup, this new generation of Robinhood players has been taking the region by storm.

GK Jonathan Fonkel earned the Best GK Award in the Caribbean Cup for making 33 saves and keeping five clean sheets, while Jamilhio Rigters tallied three goals and had two assists in the Caribbean Cup.

Franklin Singodikromo was the epitome of a superb sub by coming off the bench to score a crucial goal in the semifinals and then adding a goal and an assist in the Final.

The Caribbean champions can expect a stern test in the first leg in Alajuela and will have to contend with some of the best players in Costa Rica.

Joshua Canales had a goal and an assist against Toluca, while Orlando Galo contributed a pair of assists. Elias Aguilar is an important player as well, evidenced by his four shots taken against Toluca and three career goals in Concacaf tournaments.

CS Herediano and SV Robinhood will face each other for the first time in their history.

The teams from Costa Rica and Suriname will meet again in the Concacaf Champions League since the format change in 2008/09.

The first time two teams from Suriname and Costa Rica faced each other was in the preliminary round, previously only in the final phase, the hexagonal in 1972, the final in 1987, and the quadrangular in 1983.
