SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – Saprissa introduced its first offseason signing on Tuesday, when Fabrizio Ronchetti met the media just days after signing a one-year contract with an option for another.
The 30-year-old forward spent the last 18 months with fellow Costa Rican side Cartagines, scoring 13 goals in 52 games.
"I am very grateful,” said Ronchetti. "I hope to give Saprissa what it is needing. I want to leave a mark on this club and be here for a long time.”
Ronchetti’s career began in 2004 in his native Uruguay with Juventud de las Piedras, eventually moving to Europe for stints with Italy’s Adriese and Universidad de Las Palmas of Spain. He enjoyed a productive 2012/13 campaign with Guatemala’s Suchitepequez, netting 14 goals in 40 outings.
In 2013, Ronchetti arrived in Costa Rica to play with Perez Zeledon and, a year later, joined Cartagines.
Saprissa qualified for the 2016/17 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League by winning the 2015 Costa Rican Invierno crown. It was eliminated at the semifinal stage of the 2016 Verano by rival Alajuelense, 5-1 on aggregate, nearly two weeks ago.
