MIAMI — CF Pachuca has lifted the Concacaf Champions Cup on five occasions and will look to make it six when it hosts the Columbus Crew on Saturday, June 1, at the Estadio Hidalgo in Pachuca, Hidalgo, Mexico.
Winners of the 2002, 2007, 2008, 2009/10, and 2016/17 editions, the Tuzos have been perfect when getting to the championship game, winning each of its five trips to the final. The club has also yet to lose in 30 CCC encounters at home.
CF Pachuca's record in finals at the Estadio Hidalgo is 3W-1D, with victories in the last three matches. Additionally, only Deportivo Saprissa, in 2007/2008, has been able to score against the Mexican club at their home stadium in a final.
Here is how the past five occasions went:
2002 – Monarcas Morelia 0-1 Pachuca
The only single-game final in Pachuca’s Champions Cup conquest to date was in 2002. The Tuzos played fellow Mexican side Monarcas Morelia on September 18, 2002, at the Estadio Azul in Mexico City.
Pachuca won its first continental crown with a goal from Walter Silvani in the 48', becoming the 11th Mexican club to win the Champions Cup. Alfredo Tena was the first manager to take the Tuzos to the pinnacle of Concacaf.
2007 – Pachuca 2-2 CD Guadalajara (PAC won 7–6 on penalties)
Club Deportivo Guadalajara was Pachuca’s foe in the 2007 Concacaf Champions Cup Final, with the first leg taking place away at the Estadio Jalisco. Juan Carlos Cacho scored the opening goal in the 21’ before Omar Bravo responded with a brace for the home side, in the 43’ and 66’. Marvin Cabrera tied the game in the 82’ as the first match of the series ended in a 2-2 draw.
Both sides remained inseparable in the second leg, playing to a scoreless draw at the Estadio Hidalgo. The deadlock was sustained through extra time, leaving the champion to be decided by a penalty shootout. After six correct kicks from both teams, Alberto Medina’s attempt bounced off the post for a miss to set up the winning kick from Luis Angel Landin. Pachuca lifted its second Champions Cup and first on home turf under manager Enrique Meza.
2008 – Pachuca 3-2 Deportivo Saprissa
Pachuca returned to the final in 2008 with Deportivo Saprissa as its opponent. The first leg was hosted at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa in San Jose, Costa Rica. Luis Gabriel Rey gave the Mexican outfit the lead in the 47’ before Victor Cordero tied in the 89’ for a 1-1 in the opener.
Christian Gimenez scored in the 3’ to start the second leg, and Luis Gabriel Rey scored for a second consecutive game in the 53’. Jairo Arrieta pulled one back in the 90+3', but Pachuca would hold to win 3-2 on aggregate. The team lifted the cup in back-to-back years at home under Enrique Meza.
2009/10 – Pachuca 2-2 Cruz Azul (PAC won on away goals)
In the setting of Pachuca’s first title win, the club traveled to face Cruz Azul and former coach Enrique Meza in the final of the 2009/10 Concacaf Champions League at the Estadio Azul. Emanuel Villa opened the scoring in the 20’ and the Mexico City side extended its lead on an own goal from Carlos Rodriguez in the 24’. Damian Alvarez scored for Pachuca in the 69’ in what ended as a 2-1 first-leg loss.
A dramatic ending was in store for the second leg at the Estadio Hidalgo. Pachuca would fight to tie the aggregate and won 1-0 thanks to Edgar Benitez in the 90+3'. The series ended 2-2, but the away goal rule meant Pachuca would prevail thanks to its clean sheet at home. The Tuzos lifted the Champions Cup for a fourth time and first under head coach Guillermo Rivarola.
2016/17 – Pachuca 2-1 Tigres UANL
Against Tigres UANL at the Estadio Universitario, Pachuca took a lead in the 3’ of the first leg thanks to Raul Lopez. Ismael Sosa tied the encounter for the hosts in the 32’, and the score would remain for a 1-1 draw.
Pachuca once again closed the series at home and edged their Mexican counterparts with a 1-0 victory in the second leg. Franco Jara scored the winning goal in the 83’ to deliver Pachuca's fifth Champions Cup title. Diego Alonso was the man on the sidelines as the club now looks to another Uruguayan manager in Guillermo Almada to lead the team to a sixth CCC trophy.
