MIAMI, Florida – The Philadelphia Union scored four second half goals to collect a 4-0 victory over Costa Rican side Deportivo Saprissa in the second leg of the 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League Round of 16 on Wednesday night at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania.
With the win, the Union earned a 5-0 triumph on aggregate and will face fellow MLS side Atlanta United in the quarterfinals.
The first chance of the match would go Philadelphia’s way in the 6’ when a corner kick fell right to Jakob Glesnes, whose right-footed shot rocketed off the post.
More good movement from the Union led to another great chance in the 32’ off a cross from Alejandro Bedoya, but first leg scorer Kacper Pryzybylko saw his shot deflect wide.
Philadelphia’s insistence would pay off at the start of the second half when just seconds into the second stanza, Anthony Fontana earned a penalty kick, which was converted by Jamiro Monteiro to hand the Union a 1-0 lead in the 47’.

Przybylko scored the lone Union goal in the first leg on a header and then repeated that feat on Wednesday in the 51’ with a strong header off a corner kick to increase the Philadelphia lead to 2-0.
The Union attack was riding high and it became 3-0 in the 55’ with an excellent right-footed finish from Fontana.
From there the Union defense took over to keep the Saprissa attack at bay before Monteiro capped the 4-0 scoreline with a finish in the 90’ to complete Philadelphia’s big night.
