MIAMI, Florida – The Round of 16 of the 2022 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League came to a conclusion on Thursday night with the last of the second leg matches.

Here are the top five moments from this week’s action.

Comunicaciones overcome adversity in Colorado

You name it, Comunicaciones had to overcome it to eliminate the Colorado Rapids and reach the quarterfinals. The 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League winners had to deal with cold conditions in Colorado, plus a heavy snowfall during the second half, on top of playing the final 74 minutes a man down and then hitting the crossbar three times in a penalty shootout after a narrow 1-0 loss for a 1-1 tie on aggregate. Through it all, somehow, the Cremas survived thanks in part to the goalkeeping heroics of Kevin Moscoso and are now in the final eight of the tournament.

Montreal avenge 2008-09 heartbreak

The SCCL history between CF Montreal and Santos Laguna was well documented going into their Round of 16 series. It was of course in the 2008-09 SCCL quarterfinals when Santos scored twice in second half stoppage in the second leg to win their epic series, 5-4. It was a heartbreaking result then for the Canadians, but 13 years later they avenged that result with a commanding 3-0 second leg win to take the series 3-1 on aggregate. It was certainly a happy day for Montreal players past and present.

Seattle and NYCFC keep it clean

Through the first round of matches, you’d be hard-pressed to find better performances than what the Seattle Sounders and New York City FC did this week. Seattle rolled to a 5-0 win over Motagua of Honduras, while NYCFC eliminated Santos de Guapiles of Costa Rica with a 4-0 victory. Both MLS sides kept clean sheets in both legs and will arrive into their respective quarterfinal series with plenty of confidence.

Choiniere makes history for Forge

Forge FC’s maiden voyage in the SCCL came to a close on Thursday night in their 3-1 defeat to Mexican giants Cruz Azul, but they did leave Mexico City’s famed Estadio Azteca with a bit of history. In the 26’ of Thursday night’s contest, David Choiniere fired in a right-footed shot to give Forge their first ever SCCL goal. Among the teams making their debut in the SCCL this season, Forge were the only one to have scored a goal, which represents another significant achievement for a club that started playing just three years ago.

Club Leon break through for first series win

The 2022 SCCL marks Club Leon’s fourth appearance in the tournament and now they can finally lay claim to advancing a round in the competition. After failing to advance from the group stage in 2014-15 and then losing two straight hotly contested series in 2020 and 2021, Club Leon made sure this year’s opportunity would not pass them by with a decisive 1-0 second leg win over Guasttaoya of Guatemala and a 3-0 aggregate victory.
