MONTERREY, Mexico – Monterrey continued its preparations for next month’s FIFA Club World Cup with a 2-0 win over traveling Colombian side Equidad on Saturday in a friendly before 20,000 fans at the Estadio Tecnologico.
After Stalin Motta hit the crossbar early for the visitors, the three-time CONCACAF Champions League titleholder settled down and went ahead in the 13th minute.
Lucas Silva supplied a splendid feed on the ground through the center of the Equidad defense to a sprinting Neri Cardozo. The unmarked 24-year-old Argentine one-timed the ball with his right foot from just inside the penalty area, striking it into the lower-left corner.
With four minutes left in regulation time, Cesar Delgado punctuated the scoreline with a brilliant individual effort. The former Lyon attacker received the ball 15-yards from goal on the left side of the box, skillfully dribbled split two defenders and netted from the edge of the six-yard box.
Monterrey will open its third Club World Cup campaign in Morocco on December 14, when it faces the winner of a playoff between 2012-13 Moroccan league winner Raja Casblanca and Oceania champion Auckland City.
